Language Processing and ADHD in Children

If your child has ADHD, you are all too familiar with the behaviors and symptoms associated with the condition. Some children with ADHD also struggle with a wide range of language disorders, making it even more difficult to succeed in the classroom. The ability to understand and process spoken and written language is essential to the learning process. The importance of language comprehension begins in infancy and continues throughout adulthood. The child with ADHD is more likely to have a language processing disorder than peers of the same age.

Is ADHD a Learning Disability or Mental Illness?

ADHD is one of the most researched and prevalent childhood brain disorders. When considering the question “Is ADHD a learning disability or mental illness?” many factors must be considered. When a child begins to display certain symptoms, such as inability to focus, restlessness, and hyperactivity, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is usually suspected. Parents begin to wonder, is ADHD a learning disability? Is ADHD a mental illness? How will my child cope with the symptoms of ADHD? What can I do to help my child?

Simply put, if a person has a condition that inhibits mental functioning or causes significant mental impairment to the point that it interferes with basic executive functioning skills, the condition is classified as a psychiatric disorder. Does Brain Training Work? The Science Behind Cognitive Software

What is all the buzz about brain training and the cognitive software that supports it? Although on-line brain training is a fairly new concept, companies that promote and sell cognitive software have captured a huge share of the marketplace. Brain training is an interesting and encouraging concept. Scientists and researchers who are developing these cognitive software programs are convinced that brain training using an on-line software system shows real promise. How Cognitive Flexibility Activities Help Children with ADHD

Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, face special challenges in the classroom, on the playground, in social settings, and at home. A child with ADHD feels frustrated and defeated when he can’t focus long enough to complete an assignment. Activities that should be fun, like playing a simple board game, or putting a puzzle together, can become a source of irritation and anger for the ADHD child and his playmates.

ADHD can be managed, and the symptoms can be alleviated with an effective brain training program. The ACTIVATE™ program has been researched, tested, and proven effective in managing ADHD symptoms and improving the cognitive capabilities of children who participate in the program. Brain training can change the course of a child’s academic success. If a child is introduced this innovative new way of learning at an early age, he will be less likely to surrender his will to be educated.

How Brain Training Games Improve Cognitive Flexibility

brain training gamesHow Brain Training Games Improve Cognitive Flexibility

Cognitive flexibility or conscious mental activities like thinking, remembering, learning and understanding refers to the ability to think about multiple aspects simultaneously. Although the definition can vary, one defined consistency is that cognitive flexibility is an element of executive functioning. The formal definition of executive functioning is the broad term for the neurologically-based skills that involves mental self-regulation and control in order to achieve a goal.

Now when it comes to research, measuring cognitive flexibility includes a wide array of variable tests such as A-not-B task, Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI), Dimensional Change Card Sorting Task, Multidimensional Card Selection Task, the Stroop Test and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task. Additionally, studies like the Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) have shown that specific brain regions are stimulated when a person participates in certain cognitive flexibility tasks. The brain regions include the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), basal ganglia, posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and the prefrontal cortex (PFC).

How Brain Games are Changing the Face of ADHD Therapy

adhd therapyHow Brain Games are Changing the Face of ADHD Therapy

The triumphs of science are rarely predictable, especially from a layman’s perspective. Who would have guessed that injecting a toxin into the facial muscles could alleviate migraine headaches and diminish wrinkles at the same time? Yet BOTOX has become one of the most popular medical therapies for both. Along similar lines, who could have predicted that stimulant drugs would prove to be an effective therapy for hyperactive children? Yet Ritalin and Adderall continue to be among the most commonly-prescribed medications for ADHD in children.
