Sophisticated Brain Games for Kids
Naturally increase the brain’s ability to sustain focus, memory and self-control.
Most video games for kids actually weaken their ability to sustain attention – while our brain training games strengthen the child’s own ability to sustain their attention. Although we start out with dynamic short games and lots of visual and auditory feedback – as the student progresses, those game elements fade away, until eventually the child can focus on long work sessions with very little additional stimulation. Students perform a wide range of cognitive tasks – like memorizing sequences, completing patterns, task-switching, and putting things in categories. Our unique program not only recognizes when the child makes an error, it figures out why and coaches the children in real time how to improve their thinking strategies.
The programs continually monitor performance and adjust difficulty up or down every 10-15 seconds to maintain an optimal balance between challenge and success. Dr. Wexler developed graduation criteria that move users forward if they reach a performance level high enough to challenge the stronger students (high graduation criterion) but also determine if a child has stopped improving before reaching graduation (plateau criterion) and move them forward so that they can experience new and different challenges. ACTIVATE™ moves children through exercises quickly in areas of their strength, keeps them working longer in areas of their weaknesses, and avoids keeping them working on exercises for too long after their maximum gain has been reached.
“20 percent of our special needs students moved to mainstream classes within one year of starting ACTIVATE™”
– Principal, Harlem NY
“After our students used ACTIVATE™ for just 8 weeks, the average student increased their reading ability by one full grade level.”
– Principal, Brooklyn NY
ACTIVATE™ programs recognize 40 different types of errors. Specific types of errors are then related to each of 8 core cognitive capacities. These assessments are already proven to identify children with special needs or special talents before teachers were fully aware of either. Compared to other quantitative assessments, the ACTIVATE™ reports have the advantage of drawing on thousands of responses over many different days and months, making them less susceptible to the effects of temporary periods of stress, illness, poor sleep, etc. ACTIVATE™ reports allow for comprehensive assessment of student cognition before children learn to read.
When a child makes a specific type of error above a criterion frequency, the ACTIVATE™ programs automatically provide a corrective strategy message to the child and an example of how to do the problem correctly. In addition, for some errors, the program also makes a temporary change in the way the stimulus or problem is presented so as to make it easier to see, understand of do correctly. These performance aids are phased in and out depending on the child’s performance.
ACTIVATE™ uses student data for continuous improvement of our programs. Reports display performance in terms of percentile rankings comparing student users to other users their age, and drawing from a continually growing database that already far exceeds the size and detail available from any other cognitive training program.
